“Global Burning; Rising Antidemocracy and the Climate Crisis” AND “Collective Rage”

UCI Professor of global & international Studies, Eve Darian-Smith brings her brand new book, “Global Burning; Rising Antidemocracy and the Climate Crisis,” published by Stanford University Press. Her accessible read, is another tome published by an academic who is sufficiently concerned about these times. In the second segment (minute 31:00), Brooke Aston Harper returns to talk about the upcoming play that she’s directing at The Wayward Artist), Collection of Rage; A Play in 5 Betties, a play by Jen Silverman. Ask A Voter Primary 2022 Edition: These OC Women Have It

On California’s June 7th Primary Day, “Ask A Voter” honors our biannual tradition of bringing voter stories to you listeners, on your way to the voting booth. Invited guests include: Giesela, “Gigi” Tanner (minute 1:53), mother of Ellis Reed, advocate of victims of violent crimes and one of many Moms Demand Action; Brianna, AKA @InMiniVanHell (minute 14:30), O C analyst extraordinaire on Twitter; and U C Irvine English Professor and founding director of Illuminations Julia Lupton (minute 36:21). Meet CA Congressional Dist 47 Candidate Scott Baugh AND Gun Violence Intersection With Elections

Both guests meet the listeners at this moment, the week before CA finishes the June 7th primary. First, the last primary candidate to speak on this show is Scott Baugh: attorney, Orange County Republican leader, and former CA Assemblyman. He’ll talk about his challenge to incumbent Congresswoman Katie Porter in the new 47th Con. District that includes the cities of: Seal Beach, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Costa Mesa, and Irvine. In the second segment (minute 29:20), Bethany Webb, member of the California Victims for Alternatives to the Death Penalty, speaks at the intersection of gun violence and the electoral choices we all make. Her skin in this game – her sister was killed and her mother wounded in the 2011 Salon Meritage mass shooting in Seal Beach. Vote For Our Lives Rally & Vigil will be held at Seal Beach-Pier 20 on Saturday 6-4-22, 5:30 pm, gathering survivors and family members of gun violence, students, elected officials and candidates.

With just 2 weeks to go for CA’s June 7th primary, appearing first today’s program is Assemblywomen Cottie Petrie-Norris running for her third term, this time in the brand new 73rd Assembly district is which includes: Irvine, Costa Mesa, and portions of Tustin. In the second segment (minute 28:00), Bryan Chehock, Counsel for the United States Drug Enforcement Administration in the Southern District of California, will be the last of the three candidates challenging O C District Attorney incumbent Todd Spitzer to appear on this show. Yes, the Angel baseball park in Anaheim is an organizing principle.

We continue CA Primary coverage as we hear from two candidates for the O C Board of Education Trustee Area 2, inside which KUCI resides. This election is the final; there will be no run-offs. So other reason why to hang close down ballot this June 7th primary election. The new boundaries for the OC Board of Education were redrawn in 2020 and include: Seal Beach, Rossmoor, Los Alamitos, Cypress, Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley, Costa Mesa and parts of Newport Beach and portions of Irvine mainly south of I-405. The first candidate to speak is Martha Fluor, former Newport Mesa Unified School District Board Trustee, former president of the CA School Boards Association, and former special ed teacher. In the second segment (minute 34:02), Mari Barke, Chair of the OC Board of Education, affiliate of the CA Policy Center, and serves as OC coordinator for both Run Ben Run, and Carson America Inc.

Ballots are on their way to our residences. With a mere 4 weeks til the CA June 7th Primary, we hear from a few more state and local candidates. The first guest is CA 68th District Assemblyman and Republican Steven Choi who is running against Democrat Cottie Petrie-Norris of the 74th, for the newly redistricted 73rd. This new assembly district includes: Irvine, Costa Mesa, and portions of Tustin.  

In the second segment (minute 32:32), is OC District Attorney candidate Michael Jacobs, who’s challenging incumbent Todd Spitzer.

Meet 47th Congressional Dist Candidate Errol Webber AND The Poseidon Project Before the CA Coastal Commission

Continuing our CA 2022 Primary on June 7th, we start with Errol Webber, filmmaker and Republican (America First) candidate challenging Congresswoman Katie Porter in the new 47th District. The 47th District now includes: Seal Beach, Huntington Beach, Costa Mesa, Irvine, Newport Beach, and Laguna Beach.

In the second segment (minute 34:05), water policy analyst/activist Conner Everts takes us through the next public agency review of the Poseidon desalination plant proposed in Huntington Beach. “Covid in Custody” Premier at UCI AND Civic Notes from the Host

UCI professor Keramet Reiter, and UCI director Jane Page, and theater director Gavin Cameron-Webb, (minute 5:21- 45:10) talk about their collaboration that patrons can take in this weekend. The play entitled: “Covid in Custody,” is a docu-drama written by Jane and Gavin chronicling the establishment of an online archive of first hand stories of those held in California’s prisons during the COVID Pandemic. Meet Candidate Diane Harkey OC Board of Supervisor 5th District

Today we meet another candidate in our continuing coverage of the CA 2022 Primary. Diane Harkey is the former mayor of Dana Point, former member of the CA Board of Equalization, and former State Assemblywoman; she talks about her campaign running for 5th District seat on the OC Board of Supervisors. The new 5th district includes: Costa Mesa, Newport Beach, Irvine (south of I-405), Laguna Woods, Aliso Viejo, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, San Juan Capistrano, Dana Point, San Clemente, and the unincorporated area bounded on the north by Antonio Parkway, Oso Parkway, Ortega Highway, and on the south by the San Diego County line. Other candidates running for this Board of Supervisor seat are: Board of Supervisor Katrina Foley; Kevin Muldoon, City Councilmember of Newport Beach; and CA State Senator Pat Bates, all of whom have been invited to appear on this show. The primary could become the general if any candidate clears 50 per cent plus one vote.
